UNICEF South Africa’s Influential Women Circle launches first Annual Autumn Ball

UNICEF South Africa’s Influential Women Circle, which celebrates its first anniversary this month, is excited to announce the launch of its first Annual Autumn Ball, which is set to take place at the exclusive Steyn City on Thursday 4 April 2019.

The UNICEF Influential Women Circle (IWC) is a group of 20+ leading South African businesswomen who have joined together by way of a national women’s giving circle, to raise money to help protect the lives of the country’s most vulnerable children. Women that form part of the circle include businesswoman and media entrepreneur Carol Bouwer as UNICEF Special Advocate; Tina Eboka – Group MD for NTP Group; Basetsana Kumalo – Tswelopele Productions CEO; Emilie Gambade, Daily Maverick Lifestyle Editor; Anina Malherbe-Lan – founder of VIVIDLUXURY and partner in newly formed African Deluxe Company; and property mogul, Denise Dogon, to name but a few.

This exclusive fundraising event aims to bring business leaders and philanthropists together, and allows for invited corporates and individuals to purchase tickets or tables, to raise as much funds as possible for UNICEF annually.

Newly appointed UNICEF South Africa Advocate for Volunteers, Maps Maponyane will be the charming auctioneer on the evening, and the evening guarantees an unforgettable line-up of music, comedy, hospitality, networking and giving back. Guests can expect an incredible three-course dinner by the talented Open Food team, paired with delightful wines by Boschendal. The entertainment line-up includes Zakes Bantwini and band, comedian Tracey-Lee Oliver, South African crooner Brenda Mtambo and an exclusive fashion show by award-winning designer Jacques LaGrange, to name a few.

The IWC was appointed in 2018, and announced this exciting annual Autumn Ball on its one year anniversary, in order to help it reach its funding target of $200 000 by 2020. The money raised will be utilized for the #EVAC CAMPAIGN (End Violence Against Children campaign) which UNICEF is currently running in South Africa, building on Government’s vision to better protect children from violence, abuse, neglect, exclusion and inequality, and to help unlock much needed funding from corporates and individuals to scale up proven, effective and sustainable solutions to address this major impediment and to ensuring that every child has the best start in life.

Selected IWC members travelled to New York last year to attend the UN’s most important global meeting – the annual United Nations General Assembly. Held between 18 September and 30 September 2018, Special Advocate Carol Bouwer, spoke on a panel alongside other global female leaders like Chitra Ramaswami, on the topic of women leaders in philanthropy. Other prestigious guests and speakers included a keynote address from Canada’s Deputy Minister of International Development, Diane Jacovella and a presentation by Katja Iversen, President and CEO of Women Deliver.

Between 1 in 3 girls and 1 in 5 boys experience some form of violence prior to age 18 and many of them experience repeated and multiple forms of violence, most often by people they are close to and in places where they should feel safe – at home, in their communities and in schools. In disadvantaged communities, children often lack opportunities and safe spaces to learn, play and just enjoy their childhood.
