Fashion Friday

It’s a great time for Fashion right now with New York Fashion Week taking place, showcasing the hottest designer’s Spring/Summer 2012 collections.

Here are a few of our favourites so far:

Victoria Beckham Ready-to-Wear Spring/Summer 2012

“Stand-outs this season were her razor-sharp dresses, with an emphasis on the body through use of corsets, colour-blocking and decorative seaming. These were surprisingly versatile pieces which conveyed upscale sophistication and allure, and could easily transcend from the professional world to a cocktail party without a single alteration. Shown in inky navy and sable, pops of tangerine lightened many pieces up for spring. A surprising aspect of the collection was Beckham’s exploration with technical sportswear, crafting billowing jackets in slate from buoyant but pliant and tactile gazaars with functional pockets and zipper detailing. Floor-grazing, grand pleated skirts were dynamic and sporty, often gushing downward from dropped waists, another recurring theme of the collection. The designer lightened what could have been an otherwise stuffy offering with jaunty trimmings like grosgrain straps held together by metal hardware and glossy baseball caps (by Stephen Jones).” – Max Berlinger for

Ralph Lauren Ready-to-Wear Spring/Summer 2012

“Last season the designer took a jaunt to the exotic East, but this season finds him back on home turf, with the most American of muses as his guide. The Great Gatsby and its affluent leisure class was fully manifested on the label’s well-heeled runway. Cloche hats and silky separates with watercolour florals in Easter pastels opened before giving way to smooth, virginal white dresses. Masculine tailoring made a strong showing in the middle of the show, with white pinstripe blazers and loose trousers before concluding with a substantial array of eveningwear in radiant, sleek silver, dazzling ivory, and blush.” – Max Berlinger for

Vera Wang Ready-to-Wear Spring/Summer 2012

“INSPIRED this season by Alice in Wonderland, iconic New York designer Vera Wang held true to her psychedelic fairytale muse with a collection of youthful, cutting-edge designs for spring, that betrayed not a hint of the show-stopping gowns and bridal wear she’s become synonymous with.
Hoods and drawstrings on jackets and vests, along with super-short shorts added an athletic edge to the long gossamer layers and feminine frills – in the form of peplums on almost every dress, vest and jacket. The addition of bodice and corset-inspired garments and detailing – consistent throughout – was a clever nod to the fetish-wear getting so much traction of late (thank to style influencers Lady Gaga, Rhianna and Katy Perry, who have all sported harnesses recently) – but approached in such a chic, subtle manner.” – Indigo Clark for
